About Us
Welcome to the Gear Grinders 4WD Club, Inc. Website. We are a non-profit organization bringing together and promoting the interests of family oriented 4-wheeling for the purpose of social, recreational, educational, and public service. We began as a loose-knit group of 4-wheeling families, calling themselves at first, the “Indian Wells 4WD Club” and the “High Desert 4-Wheelers”. While on an outing in Saline Valley in October of 1971, they decided to become an official club and join the California Association of 4WD Clubs.
Our Attributes:
-
Education
Education in 4-wheeling is an ongoing process that emphasizes safety, responsibility, and respect for the environment. The club’s success relies on members following key guidelines such as packing out all trash, extinguishing fires completely, respecting speed limits, maintaining communication within groups, and adhering to TREAD LIGHTLY principles. Courtesy, awareness of local regulations, and leaving every area cleaner than you found it are central to promoting goodwill and preserving access for all 4-wheelers.
-
Land Use Advocacy
Backcountry road enthusiasts are urged to take immediate action to prevent road closures that threaten access to outdoor recreation. Joining local, regional, and national 4WD or land-access organizations helps strengthen the community’s voice, support conservation efforts, and promote responsible trail use. By setting a positive example, staying informed on land-use issues, and participating in advocacy, every off-roader can help preserve these routes for future generations.
-
Public Service
The club has a strong record of public service, working with organizations like the BLM, Forest Service, and National Park Service on cleanup projects, land management, and trail maintenance. They’ve supported community efforts such as fundraising events, public meetings on land closures, and local construction projects. Additionally, members have participated in charitable and stewardship activities, including the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Alabama Hills Day.
-
Around the Town
The club has actively participated in numerous Ridgecrest community events over the years, including parades, local fairs, and Chamber of Commerce activities. Members have led 4x4 tours into the El Paso Mountains and to historic sites like Cerro Gordo, as well as hosted informational booths at Maturango Junction for over a decade. Their involvement also extends to charitable events such as Relay for Life and community mapping projects.
-
Public Lands Round Table
The club participates in the Public Lands Round Table each month to provide input on issues affecting public land use. Members represent diverse interests—from conservation and recreation to mineral collecting and renewable energy—but share a common focus on responsible management of the Mojave Desert’s public lands. These meetings allow open dialogue with BLM representatives about local land management and ongoing projects.
-
Supported Organizations
The Gear Grinders support several organizations dedicated to preserving outdoor recreation and responsible land use, including Tread Lightly!, the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs, and CORVA. These groups promote trail access, environmental stewardship, and cooperation among all types of recreationists. Through this support, the club helps advocate for safe, responsible, and sustainable vehicle-based recreation on public lands.
